What’s in a Name?
When I was a kid, I loved writing stories, and my favorite part was naming the characters. I mulled over my options for ages, considering what to call each one and how the names of the various characters would sound together. So, it came as no surprise that one of the things I enjoyed about being pregnant was considering baby names.
Here's a list of things you may want to consider when evaluating a potential name for your baby:
1. Do any of your family members, friends, or friends’ children have that name?
This can be a benefit, as in the case of naming your child after a beloved relative. I share my first name with my grandmother, and it is a connection I cherish. On the flip side, to prevent confusion, you may want to avoid giving your child the same name as one of their cousins or one of your close friend's children.
2. What does the name mean?
I love the meaning of my given name, which means “pearl consecrated to God.” Since my name is deeply meaningful for me, I carefully researched the meaning of potential names for my children. Not all name meanings are positive, so it’s worth checking what the meaning and origin of a name is before giving it to your child.
3. How does the full name, including first, middle, and last, sound together?
Some names flow together nicely, while others seem to clash or sound funny together.
4. What initials would your child have?
Avoid names that would give your child an embarrassing or offensive set of initials.
5. How popular is the name?
Popularity of names fluctuates with time. My grandfather was determined for his children to have unusual names, since when he was growing up, his name was so common that there were other boys at his school with exactly the same full name as him. Ironically, the names of his six children have all grown dramatically in popularity over the last 60 years. Even my aunt’s lovely name, Mavis, which stayed unusual the longest, is now enjoying the limelight again.
What about you? What factors are important to you when you think about baby names?
